The history of sports photography is tightly related to the trends of sport gaining popularity throughout human history. The technology of photography from the early 1800s onward leaped forward in bounds and aided an emerging media, sporting journalism.

The inspiration of athletics and sport in art can certainly be seen in the work of the ancient Greek masters of sculpture, however this type of expression was not as prevalent in modern sporting venues until the invention of wet-collodion and dry-plate photographic processes. These processes allowed for posed studio images on glass plates and tin-types, but were just not ‘fast’ enough for the ’stop-action’ images we are used to seeing today.

As the 19th Century was coming to a close, in the 1880s scientific motion studies of athletes in action were produced in the United States and Germany, the technology was still not considered on the sporting field. This all changed with the advancement of photography and sports journals in the last part of the century. As the first sports journals began to appear around 1900, the public became more and more interested in the sports image, which often would include images of players on the tennis green, golfling or on the hunt for wild game.

In the history of sports photography the earliest of contributors were more concerned with the activities of the country elite, but by the end of World War I, readers of sporting journals were becoming interested in the professional athletes of American baseball and tennis. The majority of these early images were of prominent players in posed situations, giving te sense of action. Baseball players were posed with bat in hand at the plate, teams were lined up for group shots and so forth, however the ‘action’ shot was still not widely seen.

With the 1930s more and more images of athletes in action were appearing in magazines, assisted in their growth through camera systems allowing photographers shutter speeds up to 1/1000th of a second. This gave way to styles highlighting blurred subjects suggesting movement and ’stop-action’ images of the athlete in activity. Photographers began adopting signature styles and the popularity of the genre began to grow rapidly as the public began to expect the excitement of seeing their favored athletes in ‘action.’

In 1954, Sports Illustrated - the vaunted digest of sports and athletics - premiered and suddenly the position of being a sports photographer became even more engrained in the public eye. The magazine highlighted the exploits and professional and amateur athletes the world over, increasing the need for the art form and those who practiced it. By this point, technology had more or less caught up with demand, with the advent of small, compact single lens reflex (SLR) cameras and the fast shutter speeds offered in the models. The history of sports photography is strongly tied to lens technology, as well, had advanced to offer the photographer a wide choice of methods to compress perspective and using depth of field for dramatic effect.

Everyone knows that one of the national past times of the United States is football, and has a basic idea of how it is played. Now what about Australia? Here it is called by many names including footy, and Aussie rules, it the national past time of Australia and is played of course primarily on this continent. However its popularity is growing, and spreading out to a few other countries that have small AFL leagues.

They began organization of the sport in 1858, and the official Australian football rules of the game were set in 1859 by the Melbourne Football Club. However some form or another of football dates back to 1956. In 1896 the first league was formed from eight different clubs, The Victorian Football League, known as VFL. Then in 1990 the name was changed to AFL, Australian Football League.

As for the Australian football rules, at first glance is looks like a cross between US football and soccer. It is made up of two teams of eighteen players using an oblong shaped or prolate spheroid ball similar to the US football or rugby ball. It is also played on an oval grass field like cricket, unlike the rectangular field of football. There are four quarters to the game, and the purpose is the kicking a goal between the opponents two goal posts at the opposite end of the field.

Here in the Australian football rules there is no such thing as offsides. At the beginning of a play only four of the team members are allowed in the center square other then that there are no actual set positions for players. The umpire bounces or tosses the ball into play as in basketball which signifies the start of the play.

The rules clearly state that the ball can not be thrown. It can be projected any direction kicking it, hit with a clenched fist or an open hand, but never thrown in any way. Thrown being broadly described in the rules as anything open handed that can cause the ball to move through the air upward. As for holding, it can be held while running, but must touch the ground every 15 meters. The player running with position of the ball can be bumped or tackled between the shoulders and the knees. Now if that player is tackled he must release the ball or risk a holding penalty.

Scoring a goal is not as easy as it looks. The ball has to make it between the goal posts by the opposing team by kicking it or from it bouncing off the ground. It can’t have been touched though by any player in any way nor can a goal be made accidentally by the defending team. Aussie rules is most defiantly a contact sport being physically and mentally demanding.

The PGA tees it up at the Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina Thursday, one week after the Green Jacket was handed out at Augusta during the Masters. Most tournaments wouldn’t produce a very big turnout after a prestigious event with the quality of the Masters, but that’s just not the case with the Heritage. The Heritage has always drawn big names and it does again this season with the likes of Jim Furyk, Ernie Els and Geoff Ogilvy signed up to play.

Aaron Baddeley, the defending champion of this event, returns after winning by a single stroke over Jim Furyk and Billy Mayfair last year. Baddeley already has a win under his belt this season with a nice performance at the FBR Open in February. He has looked great in other tournaments as well, missing just one cut while posting three Top 15 finishes.

If Baddeley doesn’t repeat this year, there is a long list of former Heritage Champions that would be glad to take his place. The chances of a former champion winning again are through the roof. Out of the last 10 tournament winners, eight are set to come back and take their chances in the Heritage of 2007. The list of former winners includes Davis Love III, the all-time leader in wins at the Heritage. Love III last won in 2003, which was his 5th total win in Harbour Town. Love has not fared well in his last two tournaments, so his chances of putting up a 6th win are pretty slim in 2007. Other former winners to keep your eye on would be Peter Lonard, the 2006 Champion, Stewart Cink (2000 & 2004) and Justin Leonard (2002).

Zach Johnson, the 2007 Masters Champion, is giving the Heritage a shot this weekend. The chances of him winning back-to-back weekends do not look very good. Only once in the history of the Heritage has the winner of the Masters won the Heritage tournament the following weekend. That player was Bernhard Langer back in 1985. Johnson is listed as at 28/1 odds to win the 2007 Verizon Heritage.

Here are a couple notables incase you want a little action on the golf tournament this weekend. Jim Furyk is listed as the favorite to win after his 2nd place finish last season with 10/1 odds. Ernie Els, who hasn’t won in ages, is listed with 12/1 odds. In 3rd place comes Geoff Ogilvy, listed with 16/1 odds, and this guy has the ability to run away with any tournament as he reeks of confidence. A few other players that I think might have a shot are Love III at 20/1 odds, Justin Rose at 22/1 odds, Aaron Baddeley at 33/1 odds. A couple long shots to look at would be Chad Campbell at 50/1, Brett Wetterich at 66/1 and Camillo Villegas with 80/1 odds to win. Looks like the Heritage will be another exciting PGA event to follow up last week’s Masters tournament filled with drama.

Horse racing has been around since the dawn of mankind. It could have started 4,500 years before the birth of Christ in the plains of Central Asia. This is where the horse was first domesticated. Horse racing has been the sport of royalty for thousands of years. Modern horse racing flourishes now because of its gambling aspect. In the U.S., horse racing is the second most widely attended spectator sport, second only to baseball. Horse racing is also a professional sport in numerous other countries.

Different Races

The most popular form of horse racing is what is known as thoroughbred racing. This is the racing of horse over flat courses. The distances of these type of races vary from three-quarters of a mile to two miles. This is also the most ancient form of horse racing. It was already an event in the ancient Olympics. Modern racing began in the 12th century when English knights brought over Arab horses to Europe.

Harness racing also dates back to ancient times but the sport almost disappeared with the fall of the Roman Empire. The modern version of harness racing began in America where racing horses over country roads was a popular pastime until the end of the 18th century. Standardbred horse are used in harness racing. They are bred specifically for this purpose.

Steeplechases are races that include such obstacles as fences, walls, rails and water jumps. Organized steeplechases began in the early 1800s and continue to be popular in the UK. The premiere steeplechase is the Grand National which is held at Aintree. In the U.S., the most significant one is the U.S. Grand National Steeplechase. Hurdling is a variation of steeplechasing that has hurdles as its sole obstacle. Most horses that participate in hurdling eventually move on to steeplechasing.

All The Fuss?

Betting on the outcomes of horse races is one of the main appeals of the sport. It is probably the only reason why it has survived until modern times. Most betting takes place under the pari-mutel wagering system. A fixed percentage is taken from the total amount wagered for expenses, purses and taxes. The rest is divided to determine the payoff on each bet. The odds are calculated by computers and posted publicly during the betting period for each race. Bettors can bet on a horse to win, to place, or to show. Other wagers include the daily double, exactas, quinellas and the pick six.

Horse racing is a pastime for many people. The exciting thrill of horses dashing madly around the track is further enhanced by the rush of winning a huge wager. This activity has gone on for thousands of years and should continue for thousands more. With modern breeding techniques, the performance of horse should continue to increase and records will be broken on the tracks. This is great news for punters everywhere as the sport can only continue to grow. And as it grows, so too will the money changing hands and the opportunity to win that money.

A common technique that experts recommend for relaxation is visualization. The idea is that you close your eyes and imagine yourself in your favorite calming place. For many people this might be a beach or a mountaintop. For sports fans, one of their favorite places is likely the arena or stadium their team calls home. Stadiums and ballparks around the country have become architectural icons in their own right. What could be better than waking up each morning to a panoramic view of a legend like Boston’s Fenway Park, or relative newcomer, Camden Yards in Baltimore?

Giant prints aren’t limited to baseball stadiums. Sports fans can find landscape panoramas of NASCAR venues, NFL stadiums, NBA arenas, NHL rinks, and even college sites like Clemson University’s famed “Death Valley,” also known as Clemson Memorial Stadium. You can also find aerial views taken from blimps or high in the rafters at arenas. Prints like these can give you an everyday view of these landmarks, or commemorate a special occasion, like the opening day at a new stadium, the first game under the lights at Wrigley Field, or the celebration after a Super Bowl, World Series, or Stanley Cup win.

Speaking of commemorating great events, some fans have not only a favorite team, but favorite player as well. You can find prints that preserve wins, personal victories, and record breaking achievements. How about Michael Jordan after leading the Chicago Bulls to the NBA championship? Barry Bonds breaking the home run record? Or maybe Lance Armstrong, cycling down the Champs Elysees to his 7th consecutive Tour de France victory? Sometimes these photos are even available in shadowboxes with memorabilia such as autographs or programs. Another option is posters that look like overgrown trading cards, with your sports hero in action.

Why are sports posters and prints so popular? For one thing, they are tough to make yourself. While the ability to take great photos yourself and even have them blown up to poster size has become markedly accessible, sports photography remains a particular challenge and it is unlikely you will get the same quality shot, even if you have great seats at a game. Photographers with passes will still get closer than the best seats, and thus will have an advantage of perspective as well as talent. Most sports are about motion, and fast motion at that, and that is tougher for the novice photographer to master.

Do you want a rewarding career that also lets you work with a lot of people? This is when they learn to diagnose and treat sport related injuries that athletes have incurred. A second career in sports medicine is called a sports medicine physical therapist. A sports medicine physical therapist works with athletes to rehabilitate them from sports related injuries, muscle problems, joint problems, etc. For A career as a sports medicine physical therapist you will need to get certified as a physical therapist after your initial medical school training.

Many college campuses offer courses in sports medicine.

Knowledge is like a garden: if it is not cultivated, it cannot be harvested – African Proverb

Up until recently, I was very ignorant about my heritage. The only Black history that was taught to me was during Black History Month. Even then, I only learned a part, not the whole. According to some of my grade and high school history textbooks, my people were nothing more than savages whose only contributions to the world were farming and slaves.

Only when I came to college did I learn about the rich and interesting history that is my cultural birthright. Stories of women such as Ellen Craft, a slave who disguised herself as a white male while her husband pretended to be her servant in order to escape the chains of bondage. I was like a kid in a candy store. I had so much information and so little time to learn everything that was hidden from me. I immediately became angry. Angry at the school system that had bamboozled me and so many other generations of Black children. Angry at myself not seeking my heritage sooner. But this anger was a good thing. I would never allow myself to be this ignorant again and I would make sure that my own children would know about their heritage, with or without the school’s help.

However, there are many in the African-American community who are unaware of their heritage, other than what is shown on television. There are some who actually believe that stereotype about Africans swinging in trees when the slave boats came and that is so disheartening. The most tragic consequence of this mentality is that many African-American children are growing up today complacently ignorant about their heritage, not caring about anything other the latest pair of Air Jordans and the new 50 Cent CD.

According to African-American historian John Henrik Clarke, in order to control a people, you must first control what they think about themselves and how they regard their history and culture. And when they feel ashamed of their culture and their history, prison chains are not necessary.
That is so true. Many generations of African Americans have been poisoned with self-hatred as a result of the lack of knowledge of ourselves and our past. Some of us have forgotten about the blood, sweat, and tears of Africans who were brought to this country against their will and whose blood still runs deeply in our veins.

That is why it is so important to know one’s heritage. We have to break the cycle of complacent ignorance when it comes to our ethnic past. We know that the school system is not going to teach our children about their heritage. We cannot let another generation of African-American children suffer from cultural degradation. In our veins, flow the blood of kings and queens who fought and died for their beliefs and who would be saddened by the state of their descendents who have forgotten where they come from.
